Energy System Flashcards
What is the only fuel the human body regonises and uses
ATP- adenosine triphosphate
The three energy systems are
Creating phosphate
Lactate system
Aerobic system
How is atp made
Using the creatine phosphate
Lasts 10 seconds
Used during high intensity activity’s such as 100 metre sprint
What does the creatine phosphate system use to remake atp
Energy
And does not require oxygen fat or carb
What activities does cp do?
100 metre sprint Javelin throw Gold swing High jump This system gets exhausted after 10 seconds
What’s 50 percent restored after 30 seconds and fully restored after 5 mins
Cp and atp systems
What is the lactate system
High intensity systems that last up to 3 mins
Eg 400 metre sprint
What does the lactate system use
Stored glycogen to remake atp with out oxygen
What is the by product in the lactate sustem
The lactic acid
When lactic acid levels increase at a higher rate that they can be removed a burning sensation occurs in the muscles
What training improves the body’s ability to withstand the build up of lactic acid or remove it quickly
Interval training
Glycogen /gluecose to resynthasize atp
Glucose Glycolysis Pyruvic acid Lactic acid Released to blood
What training uses up glycogen in the muscles
Anaerobic
What is the aerobic system
The energy system that produces atp from the complete breakdown of carbohydrate, fat and protein in the presence of oxygen
What does aerobic system use as fuel
Gylcogen and Fats
Why is carnohydrate a preferred enegery source
As releases a lot of energy a lot faster
What does the aerobic system produce
Atp, carbon dioxide, water and heat from a breakdown of fat and carbohydrates
What is transported to the lungs via the circulatory system
Carbon dioxide
What’s an indication of someone’s fitness
The maximal amount of oxygen a person can take in , transport and utilise
What is the value of oxygen uptake also known as
One metabolic equivalent or met
Where does aerobic energy production take place
Mitochondria
Where does anaerobic energy production take place
Muscle cell but outside the mitochondria
What system would a golf swing or shot put use
Cp system
What system would 400 metre sprint or tennis rally use
Lactate system
What system would a marathon runner use
Aerobic system
In a 5000 metre sprint what would the first 10 seconds use system wise
Atp /cp system
What would the next 20-30 seconds of the 5000 metre sprint use
Lactate system
What system would use between 2 and 5 mins
Aerobic system
Effects of exercise on the energy systems
In aerobic adaptions
Increased number of red blood cells
Increased effiency of the heart and lungs
Stronger heart muscle
Increased stroke volume
Lower resting and working heart rate for given intensity
Increased capillaries at the muscles
Increased size and number of mitochondria
Increased effeincy of gaseous exchange
Increased oxgygen uptake
