Nervous System Flashcards
What is the role of the nervous system
Responsible for maintaining homeostasis of all internal body processes
Also responsible for providing electrical stimulus that triggers skeletal muscle to contract.
What are the 3 main functions of the nervous system
Sensation
Integration
Response
What are the main structures of the perphiral nervous system ?
Somatic system
Automatic system
Describe sensation?
When the nervous system gathers information about the internal and external environment
Describe integration
When the nervous system interprets and analyses the information gathered from the Sensors and decides what the most appropriate action is
Describe response
The nervous system responds to information analyses by initiating an appropriate response
What 4 parts is the brain made up of?
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Diencelohalon
Brain stem
What are the main structures of the central nervous system
The brain
The spinal cord
What is a motor unit
A motor unit consists of a single motor neuron.
One single motor neuron is responsible for innervating 5-1000 muscle fibres
What is the all or none law
When a impulse is sent down a neuron
All the muscle fibres within that motor unit are innervated
It activates all of its fibres or non at all
