• wheezing • prolonged expiration • difficulty breathing • cough • SoB
Asthma Inhalers > Short Acting Bronchodilators
- immediate symptom relief
- albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin)
- pirbuterol (Maxair)
Asthma Inhalers > Long Acting Bronchodilators
- up to 12 hrs of Sx relief

- long term prevention of inflammation
* Cromolyn, nedocromil
Asthma Inhalers > Corticosteroids + Bronchodilators
- long acting combination
* Advair
Emphysema
•characterized by loss of elasticity of the LU tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli, & destruction of capillaries feeding the alveoli
Emphesema > Symptoms
- SoB on exertion • hypoventilation • an expanded chest
* clubbing of the fingers d/t long standing hypoxia (w/ progression of disease)
Chronic Bronchitis
- not necessarily caused by infection & is generally part of syndrome called COPD
- defined as persistent cough that produces sputum for at least 3 months in 2 consecutive years
Chronic Bronchitis > Signs & Symptoms
• productive cough • dyspnea • cyanosis • use of accessory muscles for breathing • pulmonary hypertension
