Respiratory System Flashcards
External respiration
Bringing gas from outside to inside lungs
What happens when you breathe?
Gas exchange, take in oxygen( needed for cellular respiration), release carbon dioxide( waste product)
Internal respiration
Gas moves through lungs into bloodstream and vice versa
Cellular respiration
ATP production at the Mitochondrion
Aerobic respiration
Requires oxygen , ex: plants and animals
Diaphragm
Muscles that separates lungs from abdominal cavity and controls movement of air into and out of lungs
Inhalation
Diaphragm is pulled downward and air rushes into the lungs
Exhalation
Diaphragm relaxes and moved upward and air is squeezed out of lungs
Cilia
Hair like projections that prevent particles from entering lungs
What makes a good respiration surface?
Thin, moist, in contact with oxygen in surrounding environment , in contact with transport system
