Digestive System Flashcards
Esophagus
No digestion and is only food tube. Peristalsis moves food down
Mouth
Mechanical digestion (chewing) chemical digestion of carbs. The enzyme is salivary amylase
Stomach
Protein digestion and contains hydrochloride acid
Pancreas
Makes enzymes that are released into small intestine to break down carbs, lipids and proteins
Small intestines
Digestion of carbs lipids and proteins. Absorption of digested material by villi.
Large intestines
Reabsorption of water by villi, stores feces to be excreted in rectum
Liver
Makes bile to emulsify fat, physical digestion
Epiglottis
Prevents food from entering the wrong pipe
Peristalsis
Rhythmic muscular contractions used to move food through our digestive tract
What organs have peristalsis ?
Esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines….no accessory organs
Villi
Finger like projections that are only in the small and large intestines to increase surface area for absorption of building blocks, surrounded by blood vessels to transport the nutrients
What are the accessory organs?
FOOD DOESNT PASS THROUGH THEM ,THEY ONLY AIDS THE FOOD Liver, gall bladder ,and pancreas
Gall bladder
Stores bile
Why do enzymes break macronutrients to micronutrients?
The micronutrients are small enough to be transport to cells, not macronutrients
Name the building blocks of the macronutrients protein ,carbohydrate and lipids.
Amino acid, monosaccharides , and 3 fatty acids and glycerol
