Respiratory System Flashcards
Functions of respiratory system
Transport Gasses(oxygen and carbon dioxide)
Produce sounds- for communication (Vocal Chords)
How is breathing regulated
Breathing rate regulated by tissue pH.
Increase CO2 in tissue = decrease in pH = increase in breathing rate
Steps of Inhalation
1.Muscles between ribs contract, rib cage elevates
2.Diapragm contracts, pulled down, pushes organs down
3.Volume increases in thoracic cavity, so decrease in pressure in lungs
4.Air pushed into lungs
Steps of Exhalation
1.Rib cage comes down(Muscles relax)
2.Diaphragm returns to normal dome shape
3.Decrease volume in thoracic cavity so increase pressure in lungs
4.Air pushed out of lungs
Structures in order
Upper
1.Mouth/nose
2.Pharyx- throat
3.Epiglottis
4.Larynx- vocal box
Lower
5.Trachea- windpipe
6.Bronchi- two main branches coming from trachea
7.Bronchioles- smaller branches
8.Lungs
9.Aveoli- Gas exchange takes place
Gas Exchange in lungs. Talk about where each gas starts and ends up.
CO2- moves out of blood and into alveoli
O2- moves out of alveoli into blood
Epiglottis
flap of tissue that closes while swallowing. “Down the wrong tube”
Explain the entire process of water moving up the straw
Lower pressure inside your mouth, outside air pressure is greater so it pushes the water up the straw and into your mouth
Tell me the two systems involved in straw
Outside/Inside Air + Mouth and straw
How does this process relate to the respiratory system?
Diaphragm will increase/decrease volume which will increase/decrease pressure in the lungs.
Pressure goes from high to low
