Immune system Flashcards
Non Specific immunity
guards against all pathogens, responds to all antigens
Specific immunity
special white blood cells that work in the circulatory system, spleen, and lymphatic system react to specific pathogens, especially viruses.
How does GI tract provide non specific immunity
low and high pH, bile, and enzymes kill microorganisms
how do tears saliva and sweat provide non specific immunity
contain Lysozyne, an enzyme that kills bacteria
how does the respiratory tract provide non specific immunity
mucus traps mircoorganisms, eilla (Small hairs) bring microorganisms up and out of the body.
Macrophage function
consume virus and display antigens
Helper T cells
attach to antigens on macrophage which allerts killer t cells
Killer T
disbles infected cells so they cannot replicate the virus
B cells
produce antigens
Antibodies
attach to antigens on the virus as well as “shoot holes” in it. Alerts macrophages to consume the virus
suppressor cells
Turn off B and T cells
memory cells
remain in bloodstream to respond if the same pathogen attacks
How do vaccines work
a little peice of the virus is given in the vaccine and the memory cells remain
What is an autoimmune disorder
When your immune system recognizes your cells as foreign
Difference between HIV and AIDs
HIV is the virus that causes aids. It is not considered aids until your t cell count is under 200.
benefits of inflammatory response
Damaged cells release chemical that cause blood vessels to leak fluid to damaged area. That fluid then brings extra nutrients and oxygen to the injured cells. The pain and swelling is a defense mechanism.
What does a fever do for your immune system
Increased temp creates a hostile environment for pathogens
Increased temp signals body to recruit interferons
What is a lymph
Watery fluid that comes from plasma
3 roles of lymphatic system
Helps maintain fluid levels
removes harmful
substances and cellular debris
helps the body absorb certain fats and other molecules
why do your lymph nodes swell
Your body is fighting an infection in that certain area
Name 3 vaccines required for MI schools
Polio
MMR
Chickenpox
