Microbiology Flashcards
Miasma
The theory that poisonous vapors caused sickness. The vapors would come from decomposing matter. 19th century
Spontaneous Generation
The early belief that some forms of life could arise from vital forces present in non living or decomposing matter. This was later proved to be false by the theory of bio genesis.
Bio Genesis
Idea created by Louis Pasteur that living things can only arise from other living things
Pasteur
Pasteurization, disapproved spontaneous generation, proved Bio Genesis
Germ Theory
The theory that diseases were cause by microorganisms and not from bad smells, sins, or bad character. This theory was founded by Louis Pasteur and confirmed by Robert Koch
Lister
Sterilization of tools for surgery and wound care. Disinfecting of hands before. Listerine
Semmelweis
Infections from autopsy room to maternity ward, not washing hands.
Leeuwenhoek
Father of microbiology. First microscopes
Flemming
First Antibiotic- penicillin
Koch
Verified germ theory. Postulates
Jenner
tested gardener’s kid with cow pox, became immune to small pox. Variolation
Pathogen
Microorganism that is able to produce disease
Non pathogen
microorganisms that doesn’t produce disease
Infection
multiplication of a parasite
Pathogenicity
the ability to for an organism to cause disease, harm or not
