Respiratory System Flashcards
What do we need a respiratory system?
Your body needs oxygen in order to undergo a process called respiration.
What is respiration?
Respiration is the process of using oxygen In the body to create energy
What is energy( scientific term) ?
ATP: Adenosine triphosphate
How to create energy? ( formula)
Oxygen+food = carbon dioxide + water + energy.
What are the 3 main jobs of the respiratory system?
- To take oxygen from the atmosphere
2.To give out Carbon Dioxide and water ( sweating)
3.to make speech & sound ( Larynx & Pharynx)
Parts of the respiratory system
Mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx , trachea, bronchus, lungs, bronchioles, diaphragm, ribs & abdominal muscles
What do the mouth and nose do together?
They take air into the body
What in the nose takes the dust and the microorganisms from the air?
The hair and mucus in the nose do!!
What is the proper breathing procedure?
In through the nose out through the nose
What does the Pharynx do?
This is the opening to the respiratory and digestive system
What does the Larynx do?
The larynx is known as the “voice box” this is what allows you to make sounds.
What does the Trachea do?
The trachea allows air to go into the body towards the lungs.
How many bronchi do you have?
2
What do the bronchi do?
The bronchi bring the air from the trachea to the lungs
Where are the bronchi located
One is located in the left lung and the other is located in the right lung
What are the narrower tubes leading from the bronchus called?
Bronchiolels
How many lungs do you have & where are they in your body?
2, 1 left & 1 right lung
What is the texture of your lungs? Why?
Spongey and elasticity. They are this texture so that they can inhale & exhale.
How many alveoli are in EACH lung?
300,000
What exchange do they( alveoli) deal with?
The carbon Dioxide & oxygen exchange
Are the walls of alveoli thick or thin ?
They are thin
What are the scientific terms for breathing in and out?
Inhaling & Exhaling
What is the first step to inhaling?
It is that the diaphragm pulls down.
What is the second step to inhaling?
The second step is that the lungs increase in size because of the drop in air pressure.
