Solututions + Formations Of Crystals Flashcards
What is a solvent?
A substance that dissolves other materials to form a solution
Give an example of water being a solvent
Water & sugar
Give an example of water not being a solvent
Plastic and water
Give 2 other examples of good solvents
Hydrochloric acid (HCL) and acetone
What is a solute?
The substance that dissolves the solvent
What is the formula for a solution?
Solute and solvent
Give an example of a solution
Tea, because it consists of sugar dissolved in water
What is suspension?
A mixture in which small solids or liquid particles are suspended in a liquid
What gives a suspended liquid a cloudy appearance?
The particles ( solid ) do not dissolve nor settle at the bottom this the cloudy appearance
What is a crystal?
A solid with a regular shape. The particles inside a crystal are arranged in a regular pattern
