Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the order of the respiratory system?
Nose/ Mouth
Pharynx
Larynx
Trachea
Bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
What is alveoli
Where the diffusion takes place
Where oxygen enters the bloodstream and carbon dioxide out of the blood to be breathed out
What does inhalation or inspiration mean
Taking air down into the lungs
What is expiration or exhalation
Expelling air from the lungs
What is external respiration
Exchange of gases between the lungs and blood
What is internal respiration
Exchange of gasses between the blood and cells
What muscles are involved in breathing
Diaphragm
Intercostals
Abdominals
What makes your breathing slowed down when resting
Lack of carbon dioxide being created by a resting body
What makes breathing rate increase
An increasing turnover of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body.
The more the body works the more oxygen is needed equalling a higher breathing rate
What types of breathing are there
Costal and diaphragmatic
What is costal breathing
Expansion of the chest cavity which creates more space for the lungs to take in air
What is diaphragmatic breathing
Preferred method for low intensity/rest
Abdominal distension
What is breathing rate
Breaths taken per minute
What is minute ventilation
Amount of air exhaled and inhaled in one minute
What is the role of joints?
To allow movement to occur
