Nervous System Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
Consist of the brain and spinal cord in. Must coordinate dozens of tasks simultaneously to ensure homeostasis can be kept in the body.
Spinal cord connects the brain with all the nerves of the body
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Consist of many branches of nerves that lie outside of the spinal cord and sensory receptors responsible for relaying information
What are the three main responsibilities of the nervous system?
Sensation
Analysis
Response/output
What are the two subdivisions within the nervous system?
Autonomic nervous system
somatic, nervous system
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Takes care of all automatic responses
What is the somatic nervous system?
Your chosen response to a stimulus
What are the subdivisions of the autonomic branch of the nervous system?
Sympathetic system
Parasympathetic system
What is the sympathetic system?
Responsible for increasing a response
For example, when you’re exercising hard, the sympathetic system is responsible for increasing your breathing rate and heart rate
What is the parasympathetic system?
Responsible for the slowing affect following exertion
What are the three types of receptors in the body?
Chemoreceptors
Thermoreceptors
Baroreceptors
What do chemo receptors detect?
Changes such as carbon dioxide levels in the blood
What are thermoreceptors?
Detect changes in temperature
What are baroreceptors?
Detect changes in body position
