Endocrine Flashcards
What is the Endocrine system responsible for?
Producing and secreting, hormones to support homeostasis and being a direct response to external stimulus, such as exercise
What are the glands in the endocrine system?
Pineal gland
Hypothalamus
Pituitary gland
Thyroid gland
Thymus
Pancreas
Adrenal glands
Testees
Ovaries
What is a hypothalamus
This gland is located in the brain and is largely in control of the pituitary function, which plays a key role in hormone secretion and regulation also regulate temperature, appetite, thirst and sleep cycles
What is the pineal gland?
Small gland in the brain known for secretion of melatonin, which plays a role in regulating sleep patterns and circadian rhythm
What is the pituitary gland?
Plays a role in most hormone, secreting glands and target many different sites in the body
It’s Roles range from simulation of tissue growth to production of sex, hormones, and the regulation of metabolic processes
What is the thyroid gland?
Located in the neck and regulates the bodies Metabolic rate, heart rate and digestive function.
What is thymus?
Plays an important function in immune system
What is the pancreas?
Secrete, insulin and glucagon
The role of these hormones is to decrease and increase blood glucose levels, respectively
What is the adrenal glands?
Produces a variety of hormones, including adrenal, cortisol, and typically are stimulated as a part of the flight or flight response Increasing cardiac output in heart rate and rising blood glucose levels
What are the testicles in males responsible for?
Production of testosterone
Sperm production
Secondary sex characteristics
What are the primary rows of the ovaries?
To produce oestrogen and egg production and secondary sex characteristics
What is insulin?
Insulin interact with tissues to enable them to absorb glucose for storage as glycogen
When we experience high blood sugar levels, the pancreas secrete higher levels of insulin into the bloodstream to combat this
What is a Glucagon
When we experience low blood sugar, based on exercise or food intake, the pancreas secretes glycogen
This hormone acts upon the liver, to convert its glycogen content to glucose and release into the bloodstream
What is the growth hormone?
The pituitary gland has the responsibility of production in secretion of the growth hormone
vital in growth and development through protein synthesis and slows carbohydrates breakdown and promote fat usage
What is testosterone?
Viral for growth and repair of tissues
