Respiratory Organisms Flashcards
Lower respiratory cultures
BAP or CNA, Choc, MAC (not CO2), Acid Fast culture
Bacitracin
A disk for S. pyogenes sensitive, B hemolysis usually R
PYR
Enterococci/S. pyogenes, L-Pyrrolidonyl-B-naphthylamide substrate to make enzyme
Optochin
P disk, S. pneumoniae sensitive, A hemolytic Viridans resistant
Bile solubility
S. pneumoniae lyse in bile become clear, amidase, sodium deoxycholate
SXT PABA
Group A and Group B resistant
S pneumoniae
sinusitis, otitis media, bacteremia, amoxicillin
S. pyogenes (Group A)
M protein, streptolysin, scarlet/impetigo/Erysipelas/rheumatic
Haemophilus influenzae
small gray, shiny, GN short pleomorphic rods, satellitism,
Porphyrin test
ALA aminolevulinic acid into porphyrin (hemin), Wood’s lamp red/yellow (+), interchange with factor X, H. influenzae negative
Haemophilus test medium
Mueller Hinton agar/broth with X/V/yeast extract for B lactamase. K-B AST
Arcanobacterium haemolyticum
GPR diphtheroids, lymphadenopathy, small, clear B hemo, (reverse CAMP inhibit hemo)
Rhocococcus equi
GPR, rattles in foals, prolonged rhodo/pink
Eustachian tube
Auditory, connect middle ear and nasopharynx
Otitis media (S. pneumo/H. influ/M. cat)
fluid collect in middle ear because Eustachian tube inflamed (lead to eardrum rupture (treat tiny tube)
Otitis media treatment
Amoxicillin-clavulanate, oral cefuroxime axetil, IM ceftriaxone
