Respiratory - Histology Flashcards
What is meant by respiratory epithelium?
Pseduo-stratified, ciliated, coloumnar epithelium with goblet cells.
Where in the respiratory tract is respiratory epithelium found?
- Nasal cavity
- Sinuses
- Nasopharynx
- Trachea
- False vocal cords and larynx
- All bronchi (main, lobar, segmental)
- Conducting bronchioles
What epithelium lines the true vocal cords?
- Stratified squamous
What epithelium lines the oropharynx and laryngopharynx?
- Stratified squamous
What epithelium lines the conducting and respiratory bronchioles?
- Ciliated/non-ciliated cuboidal cells
Where are clara cells found?
Terminal bronchioles
What cells are found in the nose associated with olfaction?
- Bi polar neurons
- Serous glands of Bowman
What is the shape of a type 1 pneumocyte?
- Flat cell and nucleus, few organelles
What is the shape of a type 2 pneumocyte?
- Round cell and nucleus, rich in organelles
What makes up the blood-air barrier (from inside the alveolus to outside)?
1 - Type 1 pneumocytes
2 - Fused basement membrane
3 - Capillary endothelial cells
How is phonation achieved?
Arytenoid cartilage rotates and moves on top of the cricoid cartilage to change the shape and tension of vocal cords. This uses intrinsic muscles.
