Respiratory Histology Flashcards
What is the conducting portion of the RT?
Nasal cavities, Nasopharynx, Layrnx, Trachea, Bronchi, Primary bronchioles
What is the respiratory portion of the RT?
Secondary bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, alveoli
What kind of epithelium lines most of the RT?
pseudostratified columnar ciliated (PSCC)
What is the structure of the trachea?
PSCC with goblet cells lining, Horse-shoe cartilage rings with trachealis muscle to close the loop (smooth muscle)
What is the structure of the main bronchus?
PSCC with goblet cells lining, Cartilage begins as complete rings and then transitions to incomplete as it moves distally, spiral smooth muscle
What is the structure of the bronchioles?
<1mm diameter, simple columnar/cuboidal epithelium, no glands or cartilage, prominent smooth muscle
What are the funcitons of the 2 types of cells in alveoli?
type 1 - gas exchange
type 2 - surfactant production
