Respiratory Distress Syndrome Flashcards
What is neonatal respiratory distress syndrome?
This is a lack of surfactant causing respiratory distress in neonates
Which kind of babies is neonatal respiratory distress syndrome most common in?
Premature - they have not had enough time to produce adequate amounts of surfactant
What is surfactant and its function?
This is a substance that lines the lungs, lowers the surface tension and prevents collapse
What stimulates the secretion of Surfactant?
Steroids
What is it called when areas of the lungs collapse/do not inflate properly?
Atelectasis
Symptoms of Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome?
Tachypnoea Cyanosis Chest Recession Nasal Flaring Expiratory Grunt
Prevention of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome?
Steroids given to expectant mothers
What is Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome?
This is severe infection or inflammation of the lungs that causes a lack of oxygen provided to the body
Name one group of mothers that can have babies with respiratory distress syndrome?
Diabetics
Treatment of Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome?
Ventilation and Extra Oxygen
Artificial Surfactant
What causes ARDS?
Inflammation and infection of the lungs
- Pneumonia
- Sepsis
- Chest Infection
- Acute Pancreatitis
Symptoms of ARDS?
Shortness of breath
Rapid, Shallow breathing
Tiredness
Feeling faint
Investigations of ARDS?
Physical Examination
FBC
Pulse Oximetry
CXR
Treatment of ARDS?
ICU - Ventilation
Treat underlying cause
Complications of ARDS?
Death
Lung Damage
