Respiratory Conditions Flashcards
Physical implications
- Shortness of Breath: Difficulty
- Reduced Endurance: Limited
ability to sustain physical activity. - Chronic Coughing & Wheezing
Why Respiratory Conditions Affect Muscle Function & ATP Production
Reduced Oxygen Intake
* Poor Gas Exchange
* Increased Lactic Acid
Buildup = decreased
recovery
* Muscle Weakness & Atrophy
* Higher Energy Demand for
Breathing

Management Strategies of Respiratory Conditions
- Medications: Inhalers, bronchodilators,
corticosteroids, and oxygen therapy. - Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Exercise, breathing
techniques, and education to improve lung function. - Breathing Exercises: Techniques like diaphragmatic
and pursed-lip breathing to enhance oxygen intake. - Lifestyle Modifications: Avoid smoking, pollution,
and allergens; maintain a healthy diet and exercise
routine.
Implementing Strategies respiratory Zones
REEN ZONE = Go
* Student’s peak flow sits at or above 80% of best.
Student shows no asthmatic symptoms and may
continue PA.
* YELLOW ZONE = Caution
* Students peak flow has reached between 50-79%
of best. Student requires inhaler and rest.
* RED ZONE = Medical Emergency
* Severe asthma symptoms and peak flow reading
below 50% of best. Seek medical attention
immediately
Strategies for adaptating PA using STEP Framework for Respiratory Conditions
S - Smaller area (indoor or outdoor), Well-ventilated and temperature controlled area (indoor), Weather Awareness (outdoor)
T- Low Impact/intensity activities, Pacing Strategies, Gradual progression, Interval-based exercises
E- Oxygen Assistance, Wearable monitors, Air purifiers, Extra water bottles, Modified Exercise
machines/equipment
P- Supervised sessions, Peer Support Groups, More students in sports
