Lecture 6, Aging Flashcards
Aging and adapting
What is Healthy Aging?
“Process of optimizing opportunities for physical, social and mental
health to enable seniors to take an active part in society without discrimination
and to enjoy independence and quality of life”
What happens to Tissue and Advanced Aging?
- Slower metabolism
- Hormonal changes
- Decreased physical activity
- Cancer more likely to occur
When does Osteopenia-inadequate ossification start occuring?
Age 30 - 40
What are Skeletal System-Osteoporosis risk factors?
- Genetics (predisposes to low bone mass)
- Age (Hormones)
- Nutrition (Reduced nutrients)
- Physical Exercise (Needs stress for bone maintenance)
- Lifestyle Choices
- Medication
How do you prevent falls?
Combination of muscle strength,
endurance, balance training should be
included in programming
What is Frailty?
Reduction in physiological reserve; increased vulnerability-increased incidence of
injuries and illness
What are some Guidelines for Training?? (Resistance Training)
- Should include power and velocity training-increased ability to respond
quickly if loss of balance - Think functional!
- No OKC high velocity movements-keep it CKC
3 Things to focus on in an aging population?
Balance, Resistance Training, Aerobic (Mobility as needed)
Osteoperosis is higher in women because of? how do we fix it?
Loose estrogen which leads to loss of bone density, work on resistance training, balance, aerobic fitness
What Joints would be a target of arthritis? What should we do to help?
Knees (Weight barring Joints), Strenght train, weight barring and add movement
