What is the AODA?

A

Accessibility for Ontarian’s with Disability Act, Became law June 13, 2005
Set out mandatory accessibility standards that all levels of government, large (50+ employees) not-for profit and private sector organizations must follow

What is a Barrier according to the AODA?

A

“Anything that prevents a person with a disability from fully participating in all aspects of
society because of his or her disability”

What is a Disability according to the AODA?

A

”includes a range of conditions, some of which are visible and some of which are not visible. Conditions may have been present from birth, have been caused by an accident, or have developed over time. Disabilities include: visual, hearing, physical, intellectual, learning and mental health disabilities”

What are the 5 standards of Ontario Regulation 191?

A
  1. Information and communication-create, provide and receive information that is
    accessible for those with disability
  2. Employment-accessible workplace and employment practices
  3. Transportation-features and equipment on vehicles, routes and services accessible to
    those with varying abilities
  4. Design of public spaces-new or redeveloped public spaces accessible to those with
    varying abilities
  5. Customer service-requirements to remove barriers so that those with varying abilities
    can access goods, services and facilities

Under the AODA what are some Compliance Requirements of Businesses?

A
  • Training: Employees must receive AODA training-basic knowledge of accessibility and impact on those with disability
  • Accessibility Policy: (large organizations, all government)-written policy that includes practices for providing goods, services and facilities; must be made available to the public
  • Accessibility Plan: steps that will be taken to remove and prevent barriers to employment
