What is Blindness/ Low vision?

A

The Inability to see or a lack of vision. In most
severe cases, there is an inability to see light. It
also cannot be corrected with eyeglasses, contact
lenses, eye drops or medical therapy or surgery

How can we manage the environment to accommodate a blind/low vision individual?

A
  • Keep items in predictable locations (desks, chairs,
    tables, equipment)
  • Provide a warning to students if class layout will
    be changed
  • Provide easy access to braille equipment

How can we adapt tests and assessments to accommodate
a blind/low vision individual?

A
  • Allow use of assistive technology
  • Provide braille
  • Provide extra time for completion
  • Provide a quiet space (seperate room)
  • Oral testing rather than written testing

A

● Encourage peer work and group activities (social integration)
● Educate students on blind/low vision to create a supportive environment
● Adapt activities and games (STEP)
● Promote engagement in school clubs or groups

STEP Framework

A

S - Clear space, good lighting, high contrast
markers (thick coloured tape)
T - Verbal and physical cues > visual cues, familiarize with the task and environment before beginning game or drill
E - Use balls with bells inside (auditory aid) braille
or texture on different equipment
P - Pair with sighted partner (limited support to help build self-confidence), ensure instructors are
trained to work with blind/low vision individuals
