Respiratory Flashcards
Respiratory four functions
Deliver O2 to cells of the body and remove CO2 from cells, regulate pH of bodily fluids and blood, assist in temperature control, phonation
Where does air enter the nasal cavity from the outside
Nasal openings
Bone in the snout of pigs
Os rostri
What is found in the back of the nasal cavity and open into the nasopharynx
Internal nares
What type of cell lines the nasal cavity
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
What divides the nasal cavities
Nasal septum
Four ways air is conditioned before it enters the respiratory tract
Nasal conchae, air is warmed, air is humidified, cilia & mucus
House of smell
Nasal cavity
Where are paranasal sinuses located
In the skull
Function of paranasal sinuses
Lighten the skull
Four main paranasal sinuses
Maxillary, frontal, sphenoidal, palatine
Three sections of the pharynx
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, larngopharynx
The nasopharynx
Part of both the respiratory and digestive tracts
Oropharynx
Aids in swallowing
Laryngopharynx
Gateway into larynx, responsible for phonation
Four cartilages of the larynx
Epiglottis, thyroid cartilage, arytenoid cartilages, cricoid cartilage
What happens to the epiglottis during swallowing
Moves down and cover the glottis, preventing aspiration
Thyroid cartilage function
Supports front part of the larynx, helps hold the hyoid bone
Arytenoid cartilage function
Influence position and tension of vocal cords
Arytenoid cartilage anatomy
Triangular pieces of hyaline cartilage
Cricoid cartilage function
Makes up the only complete ring of the trachea
Larynx function
Phonation, regulating the size of airways, prevents other substances from entering airways
