Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that occurs continually in every cell of the body
What is the energy used to do from respiration?
Build larger molecules
Movement
Keeping warm
What is the word equation for respiration?
Oxygen + glucose —–> energy + carbon dioxide + water
What is the balanced symbol equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —–> 6CO + 6H2O
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen
Where does anaerobic respiration occur?
Mitochondria
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —–> lactic acid + small amount of energy
Why is there only a small amount of energy produced in respiration?
Because not all the glucose is oxidised
What does the liver to do to lactic acid?
It converts it into glucose
How does lactic acid reach the liver?
It moves into the liver via the blood
What is oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to react with lactic acid and remove it from cells
What is fermentation?
Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells
What is the economical uses of fermentation?
Bread and alcohol
What is similar about anaerobic and aerobic respiration?
A type of respiration
Releases energy
Needs glucose
Breathing rate increases
What is different about aerobic respiration to anaerobic?
Requires oxygen
Produces water
Complete breakdown of oxygen
Large amount of energy
