Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration needed for?
- Chemical reactions build larger molecules
- Muscle contraction for movement
- Keeping warm
What is aerobic respiration?
Where oxygen is used for complete oxidation of glucose.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Where not enough oxigen is available for complete oxigination of the glucose.
What is the Word and chemical reaction for anearobic respiration?
Glucose –> Lactic acid
C6H12O6 –> 2C3H6O3
What is Anearobic repiration in plant and yeast cells?
Fermentation
Glucose –> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
What happens after a human does long periods of exercise?
- The body needs more oxygen.
- The body does not have enough oxygen for aerobic reespiration
- Anearobic respiration occurs
- Lactic acid builds up in muscle causing fatigue
How is lactic acid removed?
Lactic acid is transported to the liver where it is converted back into glucose.
What is metabolism?
Sum of all reactions in a cell or the body.
What is the breakdown of Carbohydrates in metabolism?
- Synthesis of Carbohydrates from sugars.
- Breakdown of glucose in respiration to release energy
What is the breakdown of Proteins in Metabolism?
- Synthesis of amino acids from glucose and nitrate ions.
- Amino acids used to form proteins.
- excess proteins Broken down to form urea for excretion.
What is the synthesis of lipids?
One molecule of glycerol and three molecules of fatty acids
