Organisation in Animals Flashcards
What are the five levels of organisation in animals?
- Cells
- tissues
- Organs
- Organ systems
- Organisms
What is made in the pancreas?
Enzymes such as amylase, lipase and protease
What does the liver make?
Bile
What does Bile do?
Neutralises the hydrochloric acid in the stomach and emulsifies fat to small droplets.
What happens to air when you breath in?
- Into the body through nose and mouth
- Down the trachea
- Into the bronchi
- Through the bronchioles
- Into the alveoli
What is the blood made up of?
- Red blood cells - Binds to oxygen
- Plasma- transports substances and blood cells around the body
- Platelets- form blood clots to protect against infection
- White blood cells
What do arteries do?
Carries blood away from the heart (high pressure)
What is the structure of an artery?
- Thick muscular cell wall
- The walls can stretch to withstand high pressure
- Small lumen
What do Veins do?
Carries blood to the Heart
What is the structure of a Vein?
- Have valves to stop blood flowing the wrong way
- Thin walls
- Large lumen
What do Capplaries do?
- Carries blood to tissues and cells
- Connects arteries and veins
What is the structure of a Cappilary?
- One cell thick (short diffusion distance for substances to move to the blood)
- Very narrow lumen
What does the Vena Cava do?
Brings deoxygenated blood to the heart
What does the Right ventricle do?
Pumps blood into the lungs
What does the left ventricle do?
Pumps blood around the body
