Resp Physiology Flashcards
What is the pharynx and name its three parts
Muscular tube which connects the nasal cavities and the oesophagus
1) Nasopharynx
2) Oropharynx
3) Larynogopharynx
Name the three pharyngeal constrictor muscles and their role
Superior
Middle
Inferior
Contract and constrict the pharyngeal lumen to propel bolus of food towards the oesophagus.
What nerve innervates the pharungeal constrictors
VAGUS - cranial nerve 10
What are the 3 longitudinal muscles of the pharynx and what do they do?
Stylopharynges
Palatopharyngeus
Salipingopharyngeus
Role is to elevate they hyoid bone and larynx, widen the pharynx during swallowing.
What muscles innervates the the pharynx
vagus nerve excpet teh stylophayngeius which is innervated by the glossopharyngea;
what is the sensory innervation of the pharynx (each part)
Nasio pharynx = maxillary V2
Oroppharynx - glosopharungeal
Laryngopharynx - VAGUS
What is the blood supply of the pharynx
external carotid (Main branches = facial, ascending pharyngeal, maxillary and lingual)
Venous drainage of the pharynx:
pharyngeal venous plexus which drains into the internal jugular vein
