Histology Flashcards
What epithelium does Skin have?
Stratified squamous keratinising epithelium. With a thick layer of fully keratnised squmes which stain bright pink (HandE)
Name Three stains
H and E Alican Blue Van Gieson
What does H and E stain
Stains cell nuclei blue and cytoplasm pink collagen and elastic also stain pink. Water extra cellular jelly does not stain at all - not spaces
What is simple epithelia
Single layer of cells
Stratified epithelia is?
Many layers of cells
Describe simple squamous epithelium
Single layer of flattened cells with paralell oval nucleus
describe Cubidal Epithelium.
Single layer of cells roughly square profile with a round nuclues.
Describe Simple Columnar
Single laer of cells taller than wide with an oval, perpendicular nucleus.
Name three examples of Simple columnar
Bronchus (with cillia) Small intestine Gall Bladder
What are regular finger like projections from the apical surface of absoprtative cells.
Microvilli.
Define Cilla
regular motile appendages on teh apical surfaces of cells of parts of the respiratory and female reproductve tracts.
Four features of stratified epithelia.
protective function Composed of many cells continaully being worn down worn away cells replaced from below
where is stratified epithlia located.
Found in areas where there is continuous abrasion.
Sub types of stratified are
Squamous: keratinised (skin) and non keratinised (mouth, oesophagus and vagina) Cuboidal: found in some large ducts.
Sub types of stratified are
Squamous: keratinised (skin) and non keratinised (mouth, oesophagus and vagina) Cuboidal: found in some large ducts.
Pseudo stratified epithelia
strecthable cells piled up on a basement membrane. Trachea (stretches easily) Urinary Bladder (stretches and is urine proof)
What are Tight Junctions
band like fusions between cells that are impervious to most molecules.
Desmosomes define:
plaques that form physical joins between cells and connect the cytoskeletons of adjacent cells.
Gap Junctions
electrical junctions that permit the transfer of small molecules.
What is the Basement membrane
Vital component of ALL epithelia: composed of several extra - cellular proteins including collagen and fibronectin. Seperates teh wpithelium from underlying connective tissue essential for proper functionsing
What is respiratory epithelium
Ciliated (muco cilliary ) pseudo stratified (elastic) columnar With goblet cells (secretion of mucous)
Name the tree tyes of muscles fibres
Type 1 a - slow twich fibres
Type 2a - fast twitch mixed fibres
type 2b Fast twitch non mixed fibres
Name the connective tissue which surrounds the muscle
