what are the purposes of peer review?
quality and relevance of research, accuracy of findings, evaluate proposed designs for research funding
what is the process?
other pyschologists check before deciding if it should be published
how is the work considered?
validity, significance, originality
what can the reviewer do?
accept manuscript as is, with revisions, reject, editor makes final decision
what are the strengths?
work is methodology sound, valid and does not involve plagiarism.
authors not making unjustified claims about importance of findings of their findings= prevents scientific fraud
what are the weaknesses?
bias towards positive findings, negative findings and replications rarely published, these can be critical in establishing whether findings are reliable.
researchers can be tempted to delay or prevent publication of competing research
