attachment: formation of attachment Flashcards
what is the motivation to learn due to?
drive reduction- innate urge to fulfil primary drives
what is the formation of attachment based around?
food- children love those who feed them- cupboard love
how does attachment develop over time?
should increase steadily from birth, parents also learn to love too
how does classical and operant conditioning relate to attachment?
cc- creates attachment,
oc- strengthens attachment- infants learn crying, smiling brings positive reinforcement from adults, who learn to respond to cries- it is positively reinforced by caregiver, caregiver receives negative reinforcement when crying stops.
ao3: what is research to support comfort is more important than food for attachment?
harlow: monkeys explored more with surrogate mum rather than feeding mum.
schaffer and emerson: primary attachment figure not always feeds infant, found more than half of infants were not attached to person primarily involved in physical care.
a03: why is the learning theory reductionist?
too simplistic to explain complex attachment behaviours.
its not a full explanation as it says how but not why and does not explain benefits of an attachment, or why there is a critical period
ao3: how is the learning theory environmentally deterministic?
early learning determines later attachment behaviours- ignoring the role of nature and evolutionary benefits of an attachment- it would seem highly unlikely that instinct has nothing to do with formation of attachments.
