What is Peer review
A quality control process involving assessment of psychological research by people in the same field
What’s the purpose of peer review (3 points)
1) Allocation of research funding
2) Assessing research ratings of universities
3) Insures fraudulent research isn’t published
What is the 1st stage of peer review
Psychologist carries out research and write a report
Second stage of peer review
Report sent to editor of the journal
Third stage of peer review
Editor send report to peer experts for reviewing
Fourth stage of peer review
Peer experts report back to editor with recommendations
Fifth stage of peer review
Editor sends report back to researcher for modifications
Sixth stage of peer review
Report is published in journal
First weakness of Peer review
Publication bias as results that support hypothesis are usually preferred meaning results that don’t arent likely to be published
Second weakness of peer review
Burying groundbreaking research – reviewers critical of research that contradicts their own and ignore it
Third weakness of peer review
Institution biased – may be in favour of research conducted at prestigious universities like Oxford and males research is favoured
Fourth weakness of peer review
Trouble finding an expert – poor research may be passed because reviewer didn’t understand
Two ways Peer reviews could be made better
1) Double blind reviews (don’t know researcher)
2) Two step review (submit hypothesis first)
