What is informed consent
When participants are informed of the aims of research and can make a judgement whether to take part or not
How is informed consent dealt with
Consent form – provided before investigation
Prior general concern – participants agree to be misled but don’t know aims
Presumptive consent – people similar to participants asked if they would take part and presume this would be case for real participants
What is the right to withdraw
Participants made aware they can leave study at any time and can withdraw data
How is right to withdraw dealt with
Brief and debrief participants about right to withdraw
What is protection from harm
Participants protected from physical and mental harm with the risk no higher than normal life
How is protection from harm dealt with
Remove participants from investigation if harmed and remind of right to withdraw and contact details
What is confidentiality
Participants are data protected and confidential helping them remain anonymous
How is confidentiality dealt with
Maintain anonymity using numbers or initials rather than names
What is avoidance of deception
Participants should not be intentionally misled
How is deception dealt with
Debrief participants on true aims and offer right to withdraw and support if needed
