Research methods 8: Writing reports and peer review Flashcards
What three things do a consent form need to include?
-Purpose of the investigation
-Procedural information
-Ethical information
What would the procedural information in a consent form include?
-The way participants will be assessed
-The researcher is fully trained to conduct
-Duration of procedure
-Random allocation of participants to conditions
What would the ethical information in a consent form include?
-Remind them of their rights
-Withdraw at any time
-Withdraw data from study
-Data is confidential and anonymous
-Free to ask questions any time
What are the 5 sections of a report?
1.Title
2.Abstract
3.Introduction
4.Method section
5.Results
What should the title of a report be?
Clear, relevant and fully informative (including variables)
What should the abstract of a report be?
It should provide a short summary of the study, to establish if the full report is worth reading
When should an abstract be written?
Whilst it’s at the front of the report, it should be the last section you write.
What length should the report abstract be?
between 150 to 250 words
How should the abstract be written?
As one paragraph, structured the same as your paper.
What two parts should the introduction be made of?
-Background research
-Hypothesis
What does the Introduction - Background research involve?
It provides background information on theories and studies relevant. It contextualises research and shows where aim and hypothesis were derived from.
What does the introduction - Hypothesis involve?
A one tailed hypothesis will be made if previous research allows us to predict a direction. But without then a two tailed hypothesis will be made.
What are the 4 parts of the Method section in the report?
-Design
-Participants
-Materials
-Procedure
How is the design written in the method section of a report?
-State choice of research method
-State choice of experimental design
-Identify variables
-Ethical considerations
How is the participants written in the method section of a report?
-Target population
-Sampling method used
-Actual sample (number and how recruited)
-How participants were allocated to conditions
