Research Methods 3: Validity Flashcards
What is validity defined as?
The extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure
What are three types of validity?
-Internal validity
-External validity
-Temporal validity
What can be established if a high internal validity can be found?
A casual relationship can be established
How can we improve internal validity?
-One factor that affects the internal validity are EVs
-EVs must be minimised
-Careful planning and careful choice of research design should be used to improve internal validity
What are the two types of external validity?
-Ecological validity
-Population validity
What is temporal validity?
Validity over time, the extent to which the findings of a study or theory are relevant in todays society
What are the two ways validity can be assessed?
-Concurrent validity
-Face validity
What is concurrent validity (simplified)?
-Assessing how closely the scores on a test match a different measurement from the same participants.
What is face validity?
-looking at the test to see if they look like they are genuinely measuring what it is supposed to be.
