Water Rescue Assignment

been given size up,
advised of intended actions,

PFD or Ice Suit required when

First arriving responsibilities
Announce arrival, determine point last scene using “line of sight” system with fixed object.
First arriving info gathering
#victims, age, time in water, clothing color, swimming ability, how entered, water conditions
First arriving perimeter and accountability
Establish hot zone that extends 20 feet from edge. Hard to keep Level 3 account if moving down stream
Moving water victim instruction
Swim upstream at 45 degree angle to current “ferry angle”. Roll on back, feet downstream
Without entering water, rescue attempts using
Reach: ceiling hook, portable ladder, aerial ladder Throw: under hand toss, effective up to 60 feet.
Cold Water Immersion
96- shivering,
90- rigidity, dulled MS,
85- pulse and resp slow, mental stupor,
80- uncon and death
Mammalian Diving Reflex
Human face exposed to cold water, HR drops 50%, blood flow decreases to extremities, blood shift to thoracic to avoid lung collapse, possibly allowing longer survival period. Rescue mode for 1 hour.
Torso Reflex
cold water hits face, gasp reflex which could lead to aspiration and laryngospasm
Ice rescue options
If Reach try to hook, If throw have them twist or wrap around rope
