Reproductive system, Respiratory system, Circulatory System Flashcards
What are ovarioles?
They are subdivided functional units within the ovaries where the eggs are formed. Typical ovaries contain dozens of ovarioles
What is the spermatheca?
Where the male deposits spermatozoans where they may live for weeks, months, or years
What are follicles?
Functional units within the testes where the sperm is produced
What is the tracheal system and how is it different in insects vs other animals?
It is a system that delivers oxygen containing air to every cell in the body. It is different in that it is separate from the circulatory system. It is a network of tubes.
What are spiracles?
Valve-like openings where air enters the body. They are located laterally on the thorax and abdomen are are usually one pair per segment
How is air flow regulated?
Through small muscles that operate one or two flap-like valves within each spiracle — contracting to close the spiracle, or relaxing to open it
What are air sacs?
Some insects are provided with air sacs which are balloon like structures that can store reserves of air
What kind of circulatory system do insects have?
They have an open circulatory system where blood flows mainly within body cavities where it makes direct contact with all internal tissues and organs
What is insect blood called and how is it different?
haemolymph. It is a viscous liquid containing 75% water. It does not serve as an efficient oxygen carrier.
What are haemocytes?
The main functions are: transport of nutrients, metabolites, excretory products, hydrogen carbonate, neuromodulators and hormones.
