Byctiscus betulae
Discuss the lifecycle of the byctiscus betulae (5)
- One generation per year.
- They spend the winter as adults in the soil.
- They come out of hibernation in may/june.
- The female rolls the leaf and deposits 30-40 eggs
- On the rolled leaf the young larvae are formed and they leave in mid july and sink into the ground where they pupate

- Heteroptera (Different wings)
- Homoptera (uniform wings)
Describe the wings of Heteroptera
Front wings are leather and membranous at the tip with hind wings that are membranous
Describe the wings of homoptera
They either have leathery or membranous wings, never both
Hemiptera should really be split into four categories what are they?
- Auchenorrhyncha (focus on this one)
- Sternorrhyncha (focus on this one)
- Coleorrhyncha
- Heteroptera

Auchenorrhyncha and is called Empoasca vitis
Damage of empoasca vitis
It is a phloem sucker and makes the leaf look like its been burnt on its edges
Another type of leaf hopper is called
Zygina rhamni (3 generations) causes the leaf to fleck and slivering they are mesophyll feeders
