Reproductive system Flashcards
- areola, nipples
- milk producing, influence by estrogen and progesterone
S&F of breasts
- vulva: mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris
- Bartholin’s gland: urethra, perineum
S&F of external genitalia
four hormones involved in the menstrual cycle
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estrogen, luteinizing hormone (LH), and progesterone
two major phases of the menstrual cycle
the follicular phase and the luteal phase
female internal reproductive organs
vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries
male internal reproductive organs
prostate gland, vas deferens, and urethra
three parts of the penis
root (radix), body (shaft), and glans penis
part of the penis that’s attached to the abdominal wall and to the perineum
root (radix)
middle portion of the penis, contains vascular erectile tissue
- during erection, the vascular tissue becomes engorged
the body or shaft of the penis
- cone shaped head of the penis
- foreskin (prepuce): loose skin that covers the glans penis
- if male pt is circumcised, the foreskin was surgically removed
- this tip of the penis has nerve endings ad is very sensitive
- involved in sexual arousal
Glans penis
at the tip of the glans penis; if not at the tip, it is considered abnormal
urethral meatus
- located at the base of the penis
- covered with loose and wrinkled skin called rugae
- acts as a climate control system, allowing the testicles to be slightly away from the rest of the body and keeping them slightly cooler than normal body temp for optimal sperm development
scrotum
scrotum contains
- testicle on each side
- epididymis
- parts of the spermatic cord
primary male reproductive organs responsible for sperm and testosterone production
testes
- doughnut shaped gland about the size of a walnut located between the bladder and the rectum
- wraps around the urethra
- secretes a viscid, alkaline seminal fluid, which aids in sperm motility and in neutralizing the acidity of the vagina, thus protecting the sperm
prostate gland
nausea, vomiting, tender breasts, fatigue, bloating, GI symptoms (constipation, heartburn, or diarrhea), insomnia, irritability, mood swings
PMS signs and symptoms
menstrual history (PMS), sexual health history, pain, infertility, testicular torsion
subjective data relating to reproductive system
- usually sudden
- occurs when the testicle twists inside the scrotum
- decreasing the blood flow to the testicle
- causing severe pain and swelling in the scrotum
- surgical emergen
testicular torsion
- contraceptive history: What’re they using and are they using it properly?
- physical examination
- breast examination
- vaccination history (HPV between ages 9-26, works best if given before sexual intercourse)
assessment skills to obtain objective data for reproductive system
one true 99.99% against STI and pregnancy is the use of…
condom
- fibrocystic breast disease - pain and tenderness with both breasts
- circumcision - typically done day2 after birth, but can be done in older
- STIs
subj and obj data from assessment of the reproductive system
- bacterial vaginosis
- candidiasis
- chlamydia
- trichomoniasis
- gonorrhea
- human papillomavirus (HPV)
- genital herpes
- HIV
- syphilis
types of STIs
dx exam that’s the best screening tool to detect breast cancer
mammogram
