Reproductive Strategies SEM1 Flashcards
What do spermatocytes undergo
Undergo meiosis - forms two
meiotic divisions to form four cells
What do spermatogonial stem cells undergo
SSCs undergo mitosis
What do leydig cells produce
Produce androgens
What occur when the primordial follicles formation has stopped
Females total possible germ cell number is fixed
What are atretic follices
Follicles which were not ovulated and have died
How can meiosis be kept continuous in males
As long as there are spermatogonial stem cells supported by sertoli cells
How do males undergo meiosis
Diploid cell => 1st meiotic division => 2nd meiotic division = four haploid cells
How do females undergo meiosis
1st meiotic division (polar body) => 2nd meiotic division = 2nd polar body produced
What are mitotic diploid germ cells called in females and where are they found
Oogonia and are in prenatal ovary
What happens to oocytes when germ cells in the ovary begin meiosis
oocytes in follicles begin meiosis but then all oocytes in follicles enter meiotic arrest
When does the first meiotic division occur in females
Doesnt occur until ovulation
When does the second meiotic division occur in females
Doesnt occur until fertilisation
Where is all mitochondria inherited from
All inherited from the mother - sperm mitochondria break down after sperm enters the egg
What happens to the mRNAs when the oocyte is fertilised
The mRNAs and proteins support embryonic development until the embryonic genome activates
When do females stop producing new germ cells
Before birth - all germ cells now in resting primordial follicle
