body fluids SEM1 Flashcards
what separates intracellular fluids (ICF) and extracellular fluids (ECF)
cell membranes
what separates interstitial fluid and plasma
capillary walls
what is the total body mass of females
45% solids 55% fluids
what is the total body mass of males
40% solids 60% fluids
what is the total body fluid composed of
2/3 ICF
1/3 ECF - 80% interstitial fluid + 20% plasma
what is hydrostatic pressure
pressure at a point in static fluid, the higher the amount of fluid at this point the higher the pressure
what is osmotic pressure
the pressure required to prevent osmosis
what occurs in a hypertonic solution in in blood cells
concentration higher outside cell = water moves out of the cell causing the RBC to be shriveled
what occurs in a isotonic solution
the concertation of solutes is equal to the conc of solutes outside the cell = no net movement
what occurs in a hypotonic solution
conc of solutes outside the cell is less than inside therefor water moves inside cell and swells = burst cell
what is oncotic pressure
osmotic pressure inside plasma of blood vessel caused by proteins
what is the protein which is involved in oncotic pressure
albumin
what is electroneutrality
the no. of +ive charges equals the no. of -ive charges in a closed compartment
what are aquaporins
membrane proteins that form channels in the cell membrane for transporting water
where is aquaporin 1 (AQP1) found
found in most cells
