An adjective that refers to the name of the overall cycle.
What is anestrus?
When a female is not having repeated estrus cycles. Is normally temporary.
What is polyestrous?
When the estrous cycle repeatedly occurs throughout the year w/o seasonal influence.

What is the follicular phase?
When follicles are the dominate ovarian structure.
What is the dominant hormone in the follicular phase?
Estrogen.
*Regression of the previous CL to next dominant follicle.
What is the luteal phase?
When the corpus luteum is the dominant ovarian structure
What is the dominant hormone in the luteal phase?
P4.
*Ovulation to CL degradation.
What is proestrus?
- The stage immediately preceding estrus.
- Lasts 25 days.
- Begins when the previous CL has been made non-functional.
- Ends with the onset of estrus.
What occurs with hormones during proestrus?
It shifts from P4 dominance to E2 dominance, with E2 peaking at the end of proestrus.
What occurs in the ovary during proestrus?
- Enlargement of the ovulatory follicle.
- Antrum enlarges.
- E2 increases.
What occurs in the rest of the tract during proestrus?
- Vascularity increases.
- Endometrial gland growth in the uterus.
What is metestrus?
The time between ovulation and the formation of a functional CL.
