Conjugated equine estrogen, estradiol
Thickens cervical mucus
Tx: osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms
S/S: Thromboembolism, cancer development, endometrial hyperplasia, weight gain
Don’t smoke!
Medroxyprogesterone acetate
Tx: endometriosis, prevents ovulation
S/S: bleeding and breast tenderness
Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone (Yasmin)
Oral conception
S/S: thromboembolism
Limit these to 3-4 years
Take a missed dose as soon as possible, and double up the next day. If 3 missed doses occur then wait until the next week to start again.
Use additional protection when missed dose occurs
Clomiphene
Promotes ovulation
Multiple births may occur
*Drugs that decrease dopamine, decrease fertility
hCG
Give with clomiphene
Watch for ovarian overstimulation –> ovarian cysts
Cabergoline
Decrease release of prolactin which interferes with fertility
Oxytocin
Promotes contractions in delivery
Assess fetal heart rate tones and characteristics of UC
Only give if cervix is ripe
Methylergonovine
Make sure to watch blood pressure (HTN)
Labor promoting, treats postpartum hemorrhage
Dinoprostone, misoprostol
Ripens the cervix
Pt teaching:
1) void prior to insertion
2) lay supine, give through cervix, and remain supine 30 min after
3) if given earlier could cause a miscarriage
Magnesium Sulfate
Prolongs/delays labor
Prevents seizures
Antidote: calcium gluconate
Assess: RR, LOC, and DTRs frequently
Terbutaline
Decreases stimulation of uterus, which delays labor
S/S: pulmonary edema, dyspnea, hypotension, and reflex tachycardia
Hold if HR is brady for fetus or tachy (>120) for mom
Betamethasone
Promotes baby’s lung development
Testosterone
Tx: delayed puberty, breast cancer, male hypogonadism
S/S: virilization (increase hair), growth suppression/stunting, hepatoxic
Finasteride
Tx: BPH
Might be lifelong (6-12 months for effect)
Tamsulosin
Vasodilator making voiding easier with BPH
S/S: sexual dysfunction
