NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, ketorolac)

A

Take with food
Don’t give aspirin to children
Report abnormal bleeding
Salicylism = aspirin overdose
S/S: thromboembolic event (not applicable for aspirin), bronchospasm

Tramadol

A

non-opioid
TX: moderate to severe pain
Monitor respirations and LOC

Opioid Agonist (morphine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, oxycodone, meperidine)

A

Antidote: naloxone, naltrexone (IV or IN)
Assess: RR, Pain, LOC
Use pain levels for effectiveness of dose
S/S: low and slow (constipation, urinary retention, respiratory depression, somnolence)
meperidine is CI for older adults –> seizures

Butorphanol, buprenorphine

A

Tx: migraine control, pain
S/S: bradycardia

Allopurinol

A

Tx: gout (blocks formation of uric acid crystals)
Make sure pt is hydrated (>3L)
S/S: cataracts, skin discolaration
Get yearly eye exams

Prednisone

A

S/S: hyperglycemia, osteoporosis, hypokalemia
Don’t give with live vaccines
TAPER
Since it is a steroid the infection risk increases
