S/S: confusion among older people, n/v

Omeprazole (Prilosec)
PPI
Take 1hr before food
S/S: long-term = osteoporosis
Sucralfate
Coats stomach, coating the ulcers
Take at bedtime and 1hr before meals
Misoprostol
Tx: NSAID ulcers, cervical ripening in labor
Ondansetron (Zofran)
S/S: headache, EPS, anticholinergic
Scheduled
Dimenhydrinate
Tx: motion sickness, vertigo, emesis management
S/S: sedation, paradoxical excitation in peds, anticholinergic
Metoclopramide
Increases gastric emptying
S/S: diarrhea, cramping, EPS
Watch for bloody stool
CI: obstruction of bowels
Psyllium
Increases water into the stool
Take with 8oz of water
CI: obstruction
Docustate sodium, senna
Tx: prevent straining, consipation
S/S: diarrhea
Don’t combine with oils or herbal supplements
Bisacodyl
May be abused for weight loss
S/S: Atonic colon = intestines lose the ability to self-stimulate
Tx: constipation
Lomotil, Imodium
Tx: diarrhea
S/S: CNS depression, sedation, anticholinergic
Alosetron
REPORT CONSTIPATION
Only indicated for females, need consent
Tx: IBS-D
Lubiprostone
“lube up a stone”
Vasodilator
S/S: headache, dizziness, flatulence
Tx: IBD
Sulfasalazine
Look for sensitivity
S/S: photosensitivity, orange-tinted secretions
Tx: IBD
Immunosuppressants (azathioprine, cyclosporine, methotrexate)
S/S: bone marrow suppression, immunocompromised - watch for infection
Get regular CBC monitoring
Tx: IBD
