Representation - Tide Textual Analysis Flashcards

1
Q

Technical code of medium close up camera shot and visual code of facial expression

A

The main character in the text is extremely happy with the product.

The embracing of the iconography of the product suggests that she loves to use Tide on a regular basis.

During the time Tide was introduced, women were expected to like this product as they were confined to their traditional stereotype and remain within the domestic sphere, where they would not partake in any work outside of the home; instead they would complete domesticated chores such as cooking, cleaning and looking after the children.

Both the women and Tide are an integral part of the domestic sphere and reinforce the idea of a traditional representation of femininity.

Q

Visual codes and iconographies

A

Linen baskets, washing line and washing machines all convey the domesticated role that was expected of women during the 1950’s.

They stayed within the home and carried out household chores such as cooking and cleaning.

They also wore their hair short as this was deemed practical as well as less hazardous for women because women with longer hair would potentially get their hair caught up in machinery and cleaning agents.
