What is a ‘Hyperbole’?
Exaggerated language used to create a dramatic effect
What is a ‘Superlative’?
Indicates that something has more of a quality than anything else in a group.
E.g. biggest is the superlative form of big
What is a ‘Colloquialism’?
An informal expression that is often used in casual conversation rather than in writing
What is a ‘Mode of Address’?
This is the tone and the written or spoken style of the media product that establishes communication with an audience.
What are the 4 types of Mode of Address?
- Informal mode of address
- Formal mode of address
- Direct mode of address
- Indirect mode of address
What is an ‘Informal Mode of Address’?
Some products, for example print and online magazines aimed at young people, use slang to address their target audience directly and speak ‘their language’
What is a ‘Formal Mode of Address’?
Newspapers adopt a more formal tone, including complex vocabulary and writing styles. This suggests the target audience are more serious and sophisticated.
What is a ‘Direct Mode of Address’?
Where the media product communicates directly with the audience. An example of this would be a newsreader or a television host, instructing the audience to become part of the show, through voting etc
What is an ‘Indirect Mode of Address’?
A film or tv show would include characters who only communicate with eachother and not to the audience directly. This is indirect. It would be unusual for a character in this context to communicate with the audience, but if occurred, would be direct.
