Who was Valdimir Propp?
He came up with the theory that there are certain characters, who crop up in most narratives.
What are the 7 broad character types?
- Protagonist (or Hero)
- Antagonist (or Villain)
- Heroine/Princess
- Dispatcher
- Helper
- Donor
- False Hero
What is the role of the Protagonist?
Leads the narrative, is usually looking for something (a quest) or trying to solve something (a mystery). Does not have to be a male
What is the role of the Antagonist?
Gets in the protagonists’ way - tries to prevent him/her from fulfilling their mission.
What is the role of the Heroine/Princess?
Is usually a female who serves as a prize or reward for the hero.
What is the role of the Dispatcher?
An authority figure who sends the hero on his quest and offers a reward for completing their quest. That reward might be a prince or a princess or a cool new job.
What is the role of the Helper?
Helps the hero - often acts as a sidekick
What is the role of the Donor?
Gives the hero something - a clue, a talisman, a special power - which helps them complete their quest.
What is the role of the False Hero?
The false hero takes credit for the hero’s actions, double crosses the hero or tries to marry the princess.
