Renal System Flashcards
Characteristics of kidney
Bean-shaped of 130-150 g, the left one is 2-5 cm higher
Hilus
Where the renal artery and vein, and ureter connects to kidney
Renal cortex
Outermost shell
Renal medulla
Made up of 8-18 renal pyramids
Renal pelvis
Collection of renal calyces where the urine first presents itself
Renal capsule
Protective connective tissue that surrounds the kidney
Parenchyma
Functional portion of kidney made up of cortex and medulla
Has 1 mil nephrons
Nephrons
Functional units of kidney with their own blood supply where blood enters in from afferent arteriole n leaves thro efferent arteriole
Made up of renal corpuscle and tubule
Renal corpuscle
Where the blood is filtered
Made up of glomerulus and bowman’s capsule
Glomerulus
Bundle of fine capillary loops
Bowman’s capsule
Epithelial tissue forming a sac around the glomerulus
Renal tubule
Where the filtrate passes thro n urine is produced
Long coiled tube divided into proximal convoluted tubule, loop of henle, distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct
Glomerular filtration barrier
Fenestrated endothelia of capillaries
Basement membrane consisting of specialized proteins
Podocytes are specialized epithelial cells that wrap around the capillaries of glomerulus and they have finger-like projections that form filtration slits
Glomerular filtration
Filters blood based on size
Functions of renal tubule
Reabsorption of organic nutrients, ions (active or passive), water and secretion
