Blood Flashcards
Functions of blood
Transport, protection, regulation
Composition of blood
Plasma, blood cells and platelets
Hematocrit
Percentage volume of RBCs in blood
Plasma
Pale yellow, straw color
Buffy coat
WBCs and platelets, it is narrow and has a cream color
Coagulation
Process where blood changes from a liquid to a gel to form a blood clot
Erythrocytes
Disc-shaped cells that pick up oxygen and carbon dioxide
Characteristics of erythrocytes
No nucleus or organelles, has a diameter of 6-8 micrometers, live for 120 days
Membrane of erythrocytes
Has glycoproteins and glycolipids that determine blood type
Has spectrin and actin which gives resilience and durability allowing them to stretch and fold
Hemoglobin
A globular protein made up of 4 subunits and has a fe 2+ that binds to oxygen
Haemolysis
A rupture of RBCs and release of hemoglobin that occurs in the spleen then the empty membrane is digested by macrophages
Haematopoiesis
Production of formed elements by haemopoietic tissues
Haemocytoblast
The primordial stem cell
Erythropoesis
Production of erythrocytes
Haemocytoblast to proerythroblast to polychromatic erythoblast to reticulocytes to erythrocytes
