1912/13 - home rule bill-which would have given some self government to ireland was delayed due to war and ulster unionist violence
1916 - easter rising brutally suppressed by the british
1918 - general election - sinn fein won majority in ireland and promised to found an irish assembly in dublin. declared ireland to be an independent republic. began guerrilla war against the british particularly targeting `establishment’ organisations such as the royal irish constabulary - british government sent reinforcements called
auxiliaries in the guise of the black and tans.
1920 - black and tans open fire at a gaelic football match in dublin- 12 dead 65 wounded and burn cork
1921- anglo irish treaty - partition of ireland. de valera did not accept partition. civil war between nationalist factions until 1923. michael collins killed.
1931 - southern ireland granted full dominion status under statute of westminster
1937- became republic of eire
1948- republic of ireland act - now completely separate from britain

countrywide revolution by egyptians and sudanese against the british occupation in 1919 after the british exiled nationalist leader saad zaghul and other members of his party
widespread civil disobedience, rioting, demonstrations and strikes encompassing all classes of society
attacks on british military bases, civilian facilities and personnel, in which egyptian villages were burnt and railways destroyed

granted independence in 1922 following the milner report, but britain refused to recognise egyptian sovereignty over sudan or to withdraw forces. retained troops in suez area
