Regulation of Osmolarity Flashcards
What controls water regulation?
ADH
What controls the secretion of ADH?
Osmoreceptors in the anterior hypothalamus
What would the ingestion of hypertonic solution cause?
Increase solute load to be excreted
Increase urine flow
Dehydration
What controls the permeability of the collecting duct?
ADH
How is water reabsorbed from the collecting duct?
Oncotic pressure of vasa recta
What is the effect on ADH if ECF volume increases?
ADH secretion will decrease
Where are low P receptors located?
Left and right atria and great veins
Where are high P receptors located?
Carotid and aortic arch baroreceptors
What other stimuli will cause an increase in ADH?
Pain Emotion Stress Exercise Nocotine Morphine Traumatic surgery
What other stimuli will cause a decrease in ADH?
Alcohol
What is diabetes insipidus?
Hypothalamic areas become diseased due to tumours or in meningitis
How are patients characterised for diabetes insipidus?
Passage of very large volumes of very dilute urine (>10L daily)
How can central diabetes insipidus be treated?
Give ADH
How can peripheral diabetes insipidus be treated?
Will resolve when ion disorders are corrected
